The Algarve in a Nutshell

You are currently viewing The Algarve in a Nutshell

The Algarve is one of Europe’s most beautiful and sunny regions. Known for its picturesque beaches, charming towns and excellent cuisine, it attracts millions of tourists every year. However, the Algarve is not just a vacation paradise – it is also a place with an interesting economy, culture and lifestyle. If you’re dreaming of traveling or even moving to this corner of Portugal, here’s the most important information you should know!

Location and inhabitants

The Algarve is located in southern Portugal and has a population of about 450,000. Interestingly, in summer this number can increase several times, as the region attracts tourists from all over the world. Many people from other countries, especially the UK, Germany and France, choose to live here permanently – the Algarve is a popular destination for retirees and digital nomads. The Algarve’s largest cities are Faro (the capital), Portimão, Albufeira i Lagos.

Weather - 300 days of sunshine a year!

The Algarve is one of the sunniest places in Europe. On average, it has as many as 300 days of sunshine a year, making it an ideal vacation destination at any time. Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures reaching 25-35°C, and winters are mild, usually in the 10-18°C range. Although rains mainly occur in the winter months, snow is a real rarity here. It is worth remembering, however, that the ocean water is cool all year round – its temperature ranges from 15 to 22°C.

Algarve airport

There is one airport in the Algarve and that is Faro Airport (FAO), located about 4 km from the center of Faro. It is the only international airport in the region, handling flights from many European cities, including Poland.

How to get to the Algarve by plane?

Currently, Faro can be reached directly from many major cities (via seasonal flights) and year-round with a connecting flight in Lisbon, Porto, or other European cities, such as London or Frankfurt. Check the best connections here >>.

A good and cheap option is also to fly from Berlin directly to Faro. Flights are available all year round. You can also check flights to Spain – preferably Seville and from there take a bus to the Algarve. To find the best connections it is worth using a flight search engine. I personally often use the Kiwi website .

Traveling to the Algarve is easy and convenient – just choose the best option for you and enjoy the sun, beautiful beaches and Portuguese hospitality! 🌞🏝️

Economy and industry

Tourism is by far the region’s main industry. The Algarve is famous for its luxury resorts, beautiful beaches and excellent golf courses. A lot of people rent apartments to tourists and buying an apartment for rent still seems like a good investment. In addition to tourism, agriculture (citrus, olives, almonds), fishing and wine and cork production also play an important role. Interestingly, Portugal produces as much as 50% of the world’s cork, and the Algarve is one of the regions where it is extracted. If you’re curious about what’s interesting about Portuguese production, be sure to check out my Portuguese products store Cork Art Portugal

Earnings and cost of living

In terms of wages, the Algarve is cheaper than Lisbon, but salaries here are also somewhat lower. The average net salary is around €1000-1200, while the minimum salary in Portugal is €820 net. The cost of living depends on the location – you can live more cheaply in smaller towns, while rent prices are higher in popular resorts like Faro, Lagos and Albufeira. For example, renting a one-room apartment costs €600-1200 per month. The problem is finding an apartment for year-round rent. During the off-season tourist season there are quite a few apartments available at reasonable prices. The problem is if you want to rent something for the whole year. This is due to the fact that the owners want to use the apartments during the season to rent to tourists.

Healthcare and security

Portugal, including the Algarve, has well-developed public and private health services. Public health care (SNS) is available to residents and non-residents, but waiting times for appointments can be longer. Many people choose private clinics, which offer faster access to doctors at an affordable price.

Tourists from the European Union can use public health facilities thanks to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

With an EHIC, you have access to basic medical care (e.g., a visit to a general practitioner, emergency care in a hospital) on the same basis as residents of Portugal. This usually means a small fee, such as €5-20.

Important! The EHIC does not cover everything – it does not cover the cost of private medical treatment, medical transport to Poland or medicines in full. That’s why it’s a good idea to buy additional travel insurance before you leave, which will provide full protection in case of sudden illness, accident or the need to return to the country. I recommend choosing a PZU Wojażer policy (policy description below), which will provide care and support at a very good price. You can purchase policy online here >>.

To summarize:

✅ Take EHIC
✅ Buy good insurance
✅ Travel without stress!

Security in the Algarve

In terms of security, the Algarve is one of the safest regions in Portugal. Crime is low and locals are friendly and helpful. The only risks may be tourist scams (such as when renting an apartment online) and petty theft in popular tourist spots. It is also important to be careful on beaches and cliffs, especially during storms or strong currents.

Attractions and lifestyle

The Algarve is first and foremost a paradise for lovers of nature and active recreation. The region is famous for its breathtaking beaches, such as Praia da Marinha, Benagil and Ponta da Piedade. It’s also a great place for surfing, scuba diving, cliff hiking and boat trips to caves. During the low season, the Algarve impresses with its tranquility and authentic atmosphere, ideal for discovering the local culture. You can read more about the Algarve’s individual cities and main attractions here >>.

Daily life here moves at a much slower pace than in big cities. Portuguese people love to celebrate meals, meet for coffee and enjoy simple pleasures. Algarve cuisine is based on fresh fish, seafood, olive oil and citrus – one of the local specialties is “cataplana,” a seafood stew prepared in a special copper pot of the same name.

Is it worth visiting or living in the Algarve?

If you love sunshine, beautiful scenery and a laid-back lifestyle, the Algarve may be the perfect place for you. It’s not only a vacation paradise, but also a great place to live, especially if you’re looking for a balance between work and leisure. It’s worth visiting the region at least once to see for yourself why so many people fall in love with the Algarve forever! If you want to learn more about how I live in the Algarve, then observe me on my TikToku (@fabrykakorka), where I talk about my daily life in Portugal. *
