General information about Sagres

Sagres is a small town in the southwestern Algarve, located on the Cape St. Vincent . The city of Sagres is part of the municipality of Vila do Bispo. The entire municipality has a population of about 5,600, of which about 2,000 live in Sagres itself. Sagres is famous for its impressive high cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Sagres can sometimes be quite windy and generally cooler than other parts of the Algarve. When visiting Sagres, don’t forget to bring warm clothes with you.

Sagres is also known for its seafaring. An important figure in the history of Sagres is Henry the Sailor, who in the 15th century ushered in an era of sea expeditions that resulted in great geographical discoveries. Henry the Sailor was also the founder of the University of Lisbon, as well as the world’s first Maritime Academy in Sagres. Today’s local economy of Sagres is fully dependent on agriculture, fishing and tourism. Sagres is quite remote from the Algarve’s tourist attractions. As a result, there are relatively few tourists in Sagres.

How to get to Sagres?

The best way to get to Sagres is by car. There is no train station in the town. It is also possible to get to Sagres by bus although most of the attractions are far from the town and you have to drive there.

Martinhal beach

It is a relatively large beach in the area, but slightly smaller than Praia da Mareta. The beach is quite windy and popular with windsurfers. The beach overlooks several islets that can be explored by boat.

Tonel beach

This beach is quite popular with experienced surfers. The waves here can be quite violent and high. It is not a good option for those starting out in surfing.

Beliche beach

This beautiful beach is the most common choice of surfers. This pristine beach is surrounded by high cliffs, forming a small bay. The beach is accessible by a long staircase.

Baleeira Beach

Cape St. Vincent

Cape St. Vincent (Portuguese: Cabo de São Vincente) is the southwesternmost point of continental Europe. The cape lies about 6 kilometers from Sagres. The cliffs here rise some 75 meters vertically above the Atlantic Ocean. The sea can be ferocious here. The Romans called this cape the end of the world. During the Age of Discovery, Cape St. Vincent was the last piece of land that explorers saw before they set off into the unknown. Today, the cape still serves as a landmark for many ships sailing to or from the Mediterranean.

There is a lighthouse on Cape St. Vincent. It was built in 1846. The lighthouse is one of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe. Its light beam of 2,000 watts can reach as far as 60 kilometers.

Praia da Ingrina - a wild oasis and mysterious caves

Praia da Ingrina is a tiny, sandy cove near Sagres(municipality of Vila do Bispo), surrounded by picturesque cliffs and green belts It provides an ideal place for lovers of quiet relaxation – free parking on site and a seasonal Sebastião restaurant right on the beach with delicious, fresh food.

There is also a section of the famous Fishermen’s Trail(Trilho dos Pescadores) leading from the beach, part of the Rota Vincentina – a great option for a walk overlooking the ocean.

The ideal way to explore the coast is on a 2.5-hour SLOW kayaking trip with a guide, which allows you to quietly explore the hidden caves and rock formations between Praia da Ingrina and nearby Praia do Barranco – difficult to access by land and therefore considered a “secret” beach.
