Cork oaks and local cork products

The mountainous Serra de Monchique region in southern Portugal is considered the capital of cork. Cork is produced from the bark of a cork oak tree called sobreiro in Portugal. In the process of debarking the oak, the tree is not damaged which makes this material unique.

The bark is harvested once every 9 years and the tree is marked with a number, indicating the year of the last harvest. After harvesting, the bark is selected and then heat-treated.

The cork has unique properties. It is eco, vegan, durable, non-allergenic, and waterproof. No wonder it has many uses in construction and fashion. Cork is used to create handbags, wallets, cases, jewelry, shoes or even umbrellas. You can buy cork accessories and other Portuguese products from Poland’s online store Cork Factory.

To purchase cork products I recommend going to the Enchanted store . It is run by a very friendly gentleman named Tony, who sells tea, essential oils, hand-painted tea pots and local souvenirs in addition to cork products. Tony is a sensational character, full of energy and a kind of feistiness. He may try to treat you to the local liquor medronho and melosa. It’s worth having a glass with him and learning how these drinks are made.

Fóia Peak

Mount Fóia is the highest point in the Algarve (902 meters above sea level). The mountain is part of the Serra de Monchique mountain range . The summit of Fóia can be reached on foot, by mountain bike or by car. The summit of Fóia offers phenomenal views of the Algarve. It’s worth hiking to Fóia on a cloudless day, otherwise you won’t see much.

Also, don’t be surprised if you see people with big tubs of water. At the top of Fóia is a spring with pure water with good properties. Many people who live nearby come with big bottles of water to fill them up and take them home with them for drinking and cooking.

What to try in Monchique?

Monchique is a region rich in local flavors and typical products to try while you’re there. Here are some selected traditional products:

Honeys

Monchique is a wealth of honeys made from plants flowering on the pure slopes of the mountains. The choice is really wide – you can try multifloral, rosemary or eucalyptus honeys. Among the most famous is the one made from the medronho fruit, which has a slightly and surprisingly bitter taste.

Medronho and melosa

Monchique specializes in producing a typical strong liquor called medronho. It is produced from a small red fruit of the same name. Medronho can be tasted in restaurants, generally as a small shot served after a meal for good digestion, or in liquor stores. In Monchique you can also get a medronho-based liqueur with a touch of honey called melosa. It is a sweet but also strong liquor often preferred by ladies.

Monchique is also known for its dishes and meat products made from the black pig raised in the local mountains(porco preto).
