The village of Luz (Praia da Luz) is a small seaside village located in the municipality of Lagos in the Algarve. Once a typical fishermen’s village, today it is a booming tourist resort.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz Church
In the center of town is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz church. It is not certain when it was built, but some sources say it existed as early as 1521. In 1755, the church was partially destroyed by a tsunami that resulted from an earthquake, and was later rebuilt. The church was destroyed again, this time by a hurricane, and was reconstructed again in the 19th century. Today it symbolizes the strength and persistence of the people of Luz.

Fortaleza da nossa Senhora da Luz (also known as castle Castelo da Senhora da Luz) is one of the most important examples of 17th-century military architecture on the Algarve coast. Today, next to the fort is a restaurant with a magnificent garden and a beautiful view of the ocean.

Praia da Luz is a sensational place for those who love nature and hiking. There is a beautiful trail running through Luz, several sections of which write in the footsteps of the fishermen of the Rota Vicentina Trilho dos Pescadores. From Praia da Luz we can take a hiking trail to Lagos (about 11 km, 3 hours) or to Burgau ( about 5 km, 1:20 h).
