The Benagil Cave isn’t just another stop along the Portugal Algarve coast – it’s a geological masterpiece shaped by centuries of wind and sea. With its towering arched entrance and circular skylight (locally called “the eye”), the cave has become a symbol of natural beauty in Portugal. It’s one of the most Instagrammed places in the Algarve – and for good reason. In this article, you will learn about the new entry rules that took effect in 2024, as well as different tours and local tips on how to visit the Benagil Cave.
What is the Benagil Cave?
The Benagil Cave (Gruta de Benagil or Algar de Benagil) is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the Algarve, Portugal. Located near the small fishing village of Benagil, this stunning sea cave is famous for its massive domed ceiling with a natural skylight, golden sandstone walls, and secluded beach inside.
It’s a must-see attraction for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to experience the Algarve’s unique coastline.
New Benagil Cave Regulations from 2024
To protect the fragile ecosystem of the Benagil Cave and improve safety, strict new regulations were introduced in 2024. These rules were created by the Portuguese National Maritime Authority, in collaboration with the Lagoa Municipality, Algarve Tourism Region, and other environmental agencies.
What is No Longer Allowed:
❌ No walking or landing on the beach inside the cave – this includes both tourists and tour companies.
❌ No swimming into the cave, even with flotation devices like paddleboards or inflatables.
❌ No unguided kayak rentals near the cave.
❌ No more free access by individual visitors. Access is now limited to registered, licensed tours.
What Is Allowed from 2024 on:
✅ Access only by licensed boat or kayak tours.
✅ One guide kayak per 6 tourists is required (for guided kayak tours).
✅ Limits on how many boats/kayaks can enter at once, as well as time restrictions to reduce overcrowding.
Tip: Book with a certified tour operator to ensure you follow all legal requirements.
Important: Heavy Fines for Rule Breakers
Authorities are enforcing the new rules strictly. Fines range from €300 to €216,000 for individuals or tour companies that ignore the regulations. That’s a price no one wants to pay for a selfie.
Our tip: Always book your Benagil Cave visit with a licensed operator to stay safe, legal, and respectful of this natural wonder.
