Where to stay in the Algarve depends primarily on what kind of vacation you are looking for and what you want to do. The region is small enough that it is worth making a base in one or two places and exploring the area from there.

Here are the most visited cities in the Algarve:

  1. Lagos – the most popular city for a few days stay. Lagos is a lively, small, atmospheric town surrounded by beaches. This town is home to the famous nny natural wonder Ponta de Piedade. It is an ideal city for families, those who love sightseeing on foot and those who want to experience the local climate.
  2. Portimão – known for its long Praia da Rocha beach, which features a promenade with numerous bars and restaurants. It makes a great base for visiting nearby attractions. You can stay here for a few days to visit Monchique, Silves, Carvoeiro, Benagil Cave and Lagos.
  3. Albufeira – a party town, with a high preponderance of tourists from England. Ideal if you are looking for nighttime entertainment.
  4. Monchique – a town located in the mountains. Ideal for fans of nature, away from the hustle and bustle and taboos of tourists. Monchique is a good base for both south and east coast beaches. It is also a place where you can see the cork oaks.
  5. Sagres – Algarva’s “end of the world.” It’s a great place for those looking to try their hand at surfing, hang out on wild beaches, or tackle the unspoiled hiking trails of the Costa Vicentina National Park. Sagres and the surrounding area is also a frequent choice for RV travelers.

Where to book accommodation in the Algarve?

If you already know which region of the Algarve you want to stay in, it’s time to book your accommodation. Keep in mind that if you are traveling during the tourist season(June-September) then you should expect that many accommodations may not be available.
