Monchique<\/strong> is a municipality in the Algarve with more than 6,000<\/strong> inhabitants with a population density of 20 inhabitants<\/strong> per square kilometer. The municipality’s capital is the town of Monchique<\/strong> is surrounded by the Serra de Monchique<\/strong> mountain range .<\/strong> This mountain range separates the Algarve from the Alentejo district. Serra de Monchique has two peaks: the western F\u00f3ia<\/strong>, 902 meters above sea<\/strong> level, and Picota, 774 meters<\/strong> above sea<\/strong> level .<\/strong> <\/p>

In the past, this small village lived off agriculture, charcoal<\/strong> production ,<\/strong> wooden barrels<\/strong> and traditional medronho<\/strong> liquor. Today, the Monchique region is famous for its handicrafts: wooden chairs,<\/strong> wicker products and cork products<\/strong>. Monchique is located about 90 km from Faro.<\/strong> It takes more than an hour<\/strong> by car to get there from the airport. The route near the town is very scenic with views of forests and cork oaks. Along the way there are many roadside restaurants with local cuisine. In the Caldas de Monchique<\/strong> area along the main road there are stores selling ceramics<\/strong>and wicker products<\/strong>. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Monchique can also be reached by public transportation, specifically <\/span>by bus number 94<\/span> z<\/span> Portim\u00e3o.<\/span> The bus line is operated by the carrier <\/span>Vamus Algarve<\/span><\/a>. The starting bus stop is in the zona ribeirinha in Portim\u00e3o ( <\/span>Portim\u00e3o – Guanar\u00e9)<\/span>. The route to Monchique has 9 stops (the bus also stops in Caldas de Monchique) and takes <\/span>45 minutes<\/span>. Cork oaks and local cork products<\/h3>

The mountainous Serra de Monchique region in southern Portugal is considered the capital of cork<\/strong>. Cork is produced from the bark of a cork oak tree<\/strong> called sobreiro<\/strong> in Portugal. In the process of debarking the oak, the tree is not damaged which makes this material unique. <\/div><\/div>

The bark is harvested once every 9 years<\/strong> and the tree is marked with a number, indicating the year of the last harvest. After harvesting, the bark is selected and then heat-treated. <\/div>

The cork has unique properties. It is eco, vegan, durable, non-allergenic, and waterproof. No wonder it has many uses in construction and fashion. To purchase cork products I recommend going to the Enchanted<\/strong> store .<\/strong> It is run by a very friendly gentleman named Tony<\/strong>, who sells tea, essential oils, hand-painted tea pots and local souvenirs in addition to cork products. Tony is a sensational character, full of energy and a kind of feistiness. He may try to treat you to the local liquor medronho<\/strong> and melosa<\/strong>. It’s worth having a glass with him and learning how these drinks are made. <\/div>

F\u00f3ia Peak<\/h3>
<\/div>
Mount F\u00f3ia<\/strong> is the highest point in the Algarve (902 meters above sea level)<\/strong>. The mountain is part of the Serra de Monchique<\/strong> mountain range .<\/strong> The summit of F\u00f3ia can be reached on foot, by mountain bike or by car. The summit of F\u00f3ia offers phenomenal views of the Algarve. It’s worth hiking to F\u00f3ia on a cloudless day, otherwise you won’t see much. <\/div>

Also, don’t be surprised if you see people with big tubs of water<\/strong>. At the top of F\u00f3ia is a spring<\/strong> with pure water with good properties. Many people who live nearby come with big bottles of water to fill them up and take them home with them for drinking and cooking. <\/div>

Honeys<\/h3>

Monchique is a wealth of honeys made from plants flowering on the pure slopes of the mountains. The choice is really wide – you can try multifloral<\/strong>, rosemary<\/strong> or eucalyptus<\/strong> honeys. Among the most famous is the one made from the medronho fruit<\/strong>, which has a slightly and surprisingly bitter taste.<\/strong> <\/p>

Medronho and melosa<\/h3>
Monchique specializes in producing a typical strong liquor called medronho. <\/strong>It is produced from a small red fruit of the same name. Medronho<\/strong> can be tasted in restaurants, generally as a small shot served after a meal for good digestion, or in liquor stores. In Monchique you can also get a medronho-based liqueur with a touch of honey called melosa<\/strong>. It is a sweet but also strong liquor often preferred by ladies. <\/div>
