This temple impresses not only with its architecture, but also with a mysterious and somewhat dark attraction &#8211; <strong data-start=\"511\" data-end=\"547\">the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos)<\/strong>. <\/p><h4 data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"582\"><strong data-start=\"555\" data-end=\"582\">History and architecture<\/strong><\/h4><p data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"1028\">Construction of the church began in 1719, but work on the fa\u00e7ade and interior was interrupted by a tragic <strong data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"721\">earthquake in 1755<\/strong>. Finally, the reconstruction was not completed until <strong data-start=\"765\" data-end=\"778\">1878<\/strong>. The church represents the rich <strong data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"825\">Baroque style<\/strong> characteristic of Portuguese sacred architecture from the 18th century. The interior is filled with <strong data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"951\">gilded wood carvings<\/strong> (known as <em data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"973\">talha dourada<\/em>), ornate altars and richly decorated side chapels.   <\/p><h4 data-start=\"1030\" data-end=\"1082\"><strong data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1082\">Capela dos Ossos &#8211; a chapel made of human bones<\/strong><\/h4><p data-start=\"1083\" data-end=\"1436\">The most famous part of the church is the small but extremely <strong data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1176\">impressive Chapel of Bones<\/strong>, located at the rear of the building. Its walls and vault are covered with <strong data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1288\">the skulls and bones of some 1,200 monks<\/strong> who belonged to the Carmelite order.
