The word <strong>\u201cazulejo\u201d<\/strong> comes from the Arabic term<strong>\u201cal zellij<\/strong>,\u201d meaning \u201csmall polished stone.\u201d The technique was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors in the 8th century. In Portugal, <strong>azulejos began to gain popularity<\/strong> in the 15th century, when King <strong>Manuel I<\/strong> visited Spain and became enamored with the colorful tiles there. These tiles often depict <strong>biblical scenes<\/strong>, <strong>floral motifs<\/strong>, <strong>geometric patterns<\/strong>, as well as <strong>historical events<\/strong>. In the 17th century, azulejos began to play the role of a kind of <strong>\u201ccomic books<\/strong>,\u201d showing the history of Portugal on the walls of churches, palaces and homes. Often in cities, panels created from tiles show <strong>events<\/strong>,<strong> people<\/strong> or<strong> places <\/strong> important to the place.     <\/p><p><strong>The color scheme of azulejos<\/strong> is equally varied, although tiles in shades of <strong>blue and white<\/strong> are the most distinctive. This style, known as <strong>\u201cazul e branco<\/strong>, <strong>\u201d<\/strong> became popular in the 18th century and refers to <strong>porcelain imported from China<\/strong>. Among the exhibits are both individual tiles and entire compositions, including<strong> an impressive panorama of Lisbon<\/strong> from before the 1755 earthquake.
