1. bacalhau - the king of Portuguese tables
Portuguese cuisine is all about fresh fish. Bacalhau, or salted cod, is probably Portugal’s most famous dish. It is said that there are more than 365 ways to prepare it – one for each day of the year! Popular versions are:
- Bacalhau à Brás – cod with egg, onion and crispy fries.
- Bacalhau com Natas – cod casserole in cream.
- Bacalhau à Lagareiro – grilled cod with olive oil and potatoes.
2. Francesinha - Portuguese “toast” for the hungry
This Porto native dish is a real calorie bomb! Francesinha is a layered sandwich with ham, sausage, steak and melted cheese, covered with a spicy tomato and beer sauce. It is most often served with fries and a fried egg on top.
3. cataplana - the essence of Algarve flavor
Cataplana is a braised seafood dish, often served with rice or potatoes. It is prepared in a special sealed dish (also called cataplana), which preserves all the flavors and juices of the dish. Variations include versions withfish, clams and chorizo.
4. arroz de Marisco - Portuguese seafood risotto
This flavorful dish is reminiscent of Italian risotto, but with a Portuguese twist! Arroz de Marisco is a thick, creamy dish based on rice cooked in seafood broth, tomatoes, onions and garlic. The ingredients often include shrimp, clams, crabs and squid. The whole dish is seasoned with cilantro and served with crusty bread
5. Cozido à Portuguesa - a hearty Portuguese stew
This is one of the most filling dishes of Portuguese cuisine. Cozido à Portuguesa is a braised mixture of various meats (beef, pork, chicken), chouriço sausage, vegetables (potatoes, cabbage, carrots) and legumes. In some regions, rice or semolina (morcela) is also added.
Typical ingredients include cooked beans, potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage, rice, chicken, pork ribs, bacon, pig’s ear, pork leg and various parts of beef. Among sausages, the most common are chouriço de carne (pork sausage), farinheira (flour and fat sausage), morcela (black pudding) and chouriço de sangue (another variety of black pudding).
6. Polvo à Lagareiro - octopus in oil
This is one of the best seafood dishes in Portugal. The octopus (polvo) is first boiled and then roasted with lots of olive oil, garlic and potatoes. This makes it extremely delicate and full of flavor. This dish often appears on holiday tables, especially in northern Portugal.
7. Pastéis de Nata - a sweet symbol of Portugal
You can’t talk about Portuguese cuisine without mentioning pastéis de nata! These crunchy cupcakes with pudding cream are best enjoyed sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The most famous can be found at the Pastéis de Belém pastry shop in Lisbon, which has been baking them according to a secret recipe since 1837.
